David, I had a divorce that sounds a lot like yours. I wonder if we would have done better with collaborative. Anything but court. It went on forever. And even after that, I had to keep going back to court for this and that. I keep wondering if it will ever end.

David,
Your story is all too common. While collaborative divorce isn't for everyone, I do still believe that it has strong merits. Thanks for sharing your story.

My divorce was horrible. We were in court every other week, it seemed. By the time it was over, I was broke. My ex-wife and I will probably never talk to each other again. I wish I had known about this other process then. I think it would have saved us a lot of hassle. The worst part is that we have kids and we have to go to the same events for them. It is always tense and uncomfortable. I think they suffer the most. People should be reasonable and think about their kids when they are doing a divorce. Maybe you're right that the law should require everyone to try this process first. I wish I had.

Danny, I'm glad you had such a wonderful experience. I am a true supporter of the collaborative divorce model for all of the reasons you mentioned. Thanks for reading.

I participated in a collaborative divorce and while I was skeptical at first (yes, I admit it), everything went smoothly. I was honestly surprised at how we were all able to come up with a fair and reasonable agreement without all of the fighting that seems so prevalent in traditional divorces. My brother's divorce was an absolute nightmare. It's too bad he didn't know about collaborative divorce then. It cost him a fortune and he is quite bitter. My ex-wife and I have moved on but we are still able to remain civil to each other. That's most important when we attend events involving our children. I highly recommend this process to anyone who has to go through a divorce. It's worth it.

Marcy, When you figure it out, let me know. It certainly does need to be fixed.

Great article! All of this has been my experience as well. Your descriptions of the different processes are right on. Don't you just love that lawyer who is soooo aligned with his client that you can't even talk without it escalating to a battle? Just crazy!

If I had my way, I'd get with you and rewrite the statutes so that everyone had to at least try the collaborative process. Better yet, what if litigation just was not an option? There's got to be a way to fix this mess.... I just haven't figured it out yet -:)

Great job!
